Cybersecurity: Is Your Data Safe?

In today's modern age, people spend hours on some form of technology. From cell phones and tablets, to laptops and work computers, technology has become a natural part of our daily lives. But with these advancements in technology comes greater risks for hackers and scammers to gain access to sensitive information. Do you know how safe your personal data is?

What is Cybersecurity?

When looking for information on how to protect your online presence, you need to look into your cybersecurity processes. Cybersecurity is the safeguarding of all internet connected systems from cyber-attacks. This includes protecting computer software, data usage, and personal details. If this information becomes compromised, you could end up at risk for theft or fraud. While there are various types of cyber-attacks, which ones should you be aware of?

Common Cyber Attacks

Phishing: This process occurs when fraudulent communication is sent to an unsuspecting victim, normally through email. The sender will make the email appear to be from a reputable source (usually banks or popular brands), in hopes of stealing information the victim themselves provide or sending the victim to an unsecure website. For example, the email might include a link to a fake login page made to look like a bank's login. Once information is entered into this page, the scammer now has access to this sensitive information.

Malware: This term refers to viruses and spyware that attack a network for malicious purposes. These attacks can allow the hacker to take over the computer and steal unauthorized information or to completely destroy the device that was hacked.

Eavesdropping: A hacker will insert themselves between a victim and a transaction they are trying to complete. This commonly occurs on unsecure Wi-Fi servers (such as those located in public places), allowing the hacker to steal any information provided.

Easy Steps to Avoid Attacks

Do not click on links in emails from people you do not know. Although this sounds like a simple concept, it is very important that you're cautious about every email you receive. Scam artists are getting increasingly creative with their emails and it's becoming harder and harder to differentiate them from emails received from reputable companies.

Be cautious and aware of possible threats. Always stay up to date on new scams and cybersecurity risks. Everyone's data is at risk, and it's more important than ever that you take every precaution to ensure your information is not taken advantage of.

Keep your technology updated. Routine system updates may feel like a hassle at the time, but they are vital to maintaining your networks security. These updates often contain new developments meant to give you and your device the best opportunity to avoid any risks.
